OFILI, NIGERIA’S LOSS TURKEYS GAIN!

By Ebikefe Frank

Favour Ofili, a Nigerian sprinter, has switched her allegiance to Turkey, effective May 31, 2025.

HERE’S WHAT’S KNOWN ABOUT HER DECISION:

1. – Reasons for Switching: Ofili cited frustration with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) due to administrative failures, neglect, and lost opportunities. She specifically mentioned missing the Tokyo 2020 Olympics due to Nigeria’s failure to meet anti-doping testing requirements and being left out of the 100m event at the Paris 2024 Olympics despite meeting qualifying standards.
2. – Potential Impact: Ofili’s switch may not take immediate effect due to World Athletics rules requiring a three-year waiting period for athletes changing nationalities. However, she might be eligible for an exemption if her case is deemed exceptional.
3. – Possible Competitions: If her switch is approved, Ofili could represent Turkey at future international competitions. However, she might miss the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo and the next edition in Beijing unless an exemption is granted.
4. – Financial Implications: Although unconfirmed reports suggest Ofili could earn significant incentives, bonuses, and stipends (up to $500,000 or $1 million) from Turkey, she insists her decision wasn’t financially motivated. Turkey is known to offer attractive packages to top athletes, including monthly stipends of $30,000 and medal bonuses nearing $1 million.
5. – Reaction from AFN: The Athletics Federation of Nigeria has expressed surprise but stated they won’t oppose Ofili’s decision, acknowledging her right to choose her representation.

You really don’t know what you have until it’s gone! The AFN has repeatedly had administrative blonders with Ofili that has costed her dearly in her professional pursuit and opting out became a favourable option for her while the AFN must put it’s house in order!
