NIGERIA, BRICS AND TRUMP!
By Frank P Ebikefe
Donald Trump’s recent threat to impose additional 10% tariffs on countries aligning with BRICS’ “anti-American” policies might be a factor in his decision not to invite Nigeria to a meeting with five African countries. BRICS, a bloc of emerging economies, has been perceived as a counterbalance to Western power, and Trump’s stance on the group is clear.
BRICS AND TRUMP’S TRADE POLICIES:
1. – BRICS leaders have condemned Trump’s unilateral tariff measures, calling them detrimental to the global economy and inconsistent with World Trade Organization rules.
2. – Trump has warned that countries aligning with BRICS’ policies will face additional tariffs, without specifying what constitutes “anti-American” policies.
3. – The BRICS summit in Brazil focused on issues like global cooperation, trade, climate change, and security, with some member countries pushing for a more robust response to geopolitical issues.
NIGERIA’S RELATIONSHIP WITH ‘BRICS’:
1. – Nigeria has been mentioned as one of the countries welcomed by BRICS as a partner country, which could imply growing economic ties between Nigeria and the BRICS bloc.
2. – Trump’s tariff threats might strain relationships between the US and countries engaging with BRICS, potentially affecting Nigeria’s interactions with the US.
